Can magnets interact without touching?

If you have a magnet question, please feel free to go to the Q&A section of the NST Magnet website, which has been updated with more than 350 common magnet questions, and today's question is whether magnets can interact with each other without making contact.

The answer is yes, the effect is related to the material of the magnet, volume, shape, direction of magnetization, distance between the magnets, temperature and so on. For example, high-strength magnetic materials (e.g. NdFeB) can produce stronger magnetic fields. Larger magnets usually produce stronger magnetic fields. When the magnets are closer together, the magnetic field is stronger and the force is stronger. When magnets are farther apart, the strength of the magnetic field is much lower and the force is weaker.

Let's give you 3 examples from life to give you a better understanding;

1, Place two magnets with the same poles (e.g. N-pole and N-pole) opposite to each other, they will repel each other and even levitate in the air (magnetically levitated globe, magnetically levitated potted plant).

2, Place a magnet near iron filings or nails and the filings or nails will be attracted, the magnet is not touching them.

3, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) equipment that we go to the hospital for, also uses a powerful magnetic field to produce images of structures within the body. The magnets do not come into contact with our bodies, but the powerful magnetic field interacts with the nuclei of hydrogen atoms within the body to obtain an image.

So, magnets can interact with each other without touching, and they do so by means of a magnetic field, which is an invisible field of force that can propagate through space. Even if the magnets are not in direct contact with each other, their magnetic fields can still affect each other.
