Two processing methods of NdFeB strong magnets

NdFeB magnets have become an indispensable material in modern industry with its excellent magnetic properties. In order to meet the demands of different applications on the size and shape of magnets, the processing of sintered NdFeB magnets has become a key link in the manufacturing process, and this article will introduce in detail the two main processing methods of NdFeB magnets: slicing machine cutting and wire cutting.


Slicer Cutting

Slicer cutting is a traditional and common way of processing NdFeB magnets, which is mainly applied to larger size and simpler shape magnets, such as round and square magnets, by slicer cutting the magnets to the desired shape and size.

Slicer cutting utilizes high precision diamond saw blades or grinding wheels to cut the entire NdFeB magnetic material into slices or chunks. The slicer cutter is usually diamond because NdFeB material is hard and diamond has enough hardness and wear resistance to handle this material.


Wire-cutting

Wire EDM is a precision method of machining strong NdFeB magnets, especially suitable for cutting magnets that require high precision and complex shapes. A fine metal wire is used as the electrode, and an electric spark generated by a pulsed electric current is used to cut on the magnet. The electric spark during the cutting process rapidly melts and vaporizes a small portion of the material on the surface of the magnet, resulting in precise cutting.


Most of the special shaped neodymium magnets need to be processed by wire cutting without opening molds.


Like ceramic ferrite magnets, the main component is oxide, which makes them ineffective for wire EDM and prone to cracking or breakage.


The use of wire EDM is suitable for the processing of complex special shapes and tiny sizes of magnets, and the processing speed of wire EDM is slower than that of slicer cutting.
